Roller derby is a full-contact team sport played in two minute intervals called jams. Each team sends out five players on the track at the start of a jam: A jammer, three blockers, and a pivot. The jammer wears a helmet cover with a star on it and scores points by passing the opposing team's blockers, whereas blockers switch between defense and offense to stop the opposing jammer and get their team's jammer through the pack. Pivots are blockers that wear a striped helmet cover and in a pinch can be passed the star cover to become the jammer.
Of course! There are hundreds of teams across the world and the sport continues to grow each year.
We practice Sunday evenings from 5pm to 8pm just outside of downtown Youngstown. If you want to drop by to see what it's all about, shoot our Facebook or Instagram a message!
We wear protective gear to save our joints! Aside from our roller skates, we wear a helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, and a mouthguard.
In gameplay, there are specific target zones to ensure everyone's safety. If you hit someone in the wrong spot, you'll get a penalty and have to sit in the penalty box for thirty seconds.
No! We will teach you from the ground up how to skate and play derby.
Not necessarily! We have some limited loaner gear in a variety of sizes to keep you protected before you're ready to fully dive in. The only things you'll need to bring are a mouthguard molded to your mouth, a water bottle, and yourself!
